Alumni Success

Stefanie:

"I began studying to be an optician in May 2000, and now I work for a Bay Area Optometrist.

Previously I worked for a fire sprinkler company as a system designer for ten years. During this time I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. I underwent surgery and physical therapy to help me return to the working world. I found that being off work for an extended period of time began to undermine my self esteem.

My experience at Bay Area Optical School has made a profound impact on my life. I now have a sense of control and direction which I had lost. I am fortunate to have been given a second chance for a new career with the aid of my wonderful instructors."

Miguel:

"Before I went to Bay Area Optical School, I was a delivery driver. I fractured my elbow on the job and was not able to resume my position. A vocational counselor suggested that I train to be an Optician. When I started the school, I was very overwhelmed because I didn’t understand anything.

Many times I felt like giving up, but Mr. Waterman encouraged me to do my best. They were always available to help me out whenever I had difficulty understanding a new module. Through their encouragement I was able to motivate myself and graduate. I even received two certificates of merit for perfect attendance and achieving an “A” for each module.

After graduating I worked for a large optical company in the Bay Area, and I recently passed the National Competency Opticianry Exam given by the American Board of Opticians. I am now working at a private optometric office in San Francisco. I want to express my deep gratitude to Bay Area Optical School for my new career and success."
