| Curriculum and Schedule
Description of Program The optical assistant/optician program consists of four modules, each of which is four weeks in length. The program contains 320 clock hours. Each clock hour consists of fifty minutes of instruction. Each module is designed to be taught by itself with no pre-requisite modules required. Therefore, students may enter the program on the first day of any module.
Students learn through a combination of lecture and hands on learning. Classes meet five academic hours per day, Monday, Thursday and Friday. Open Enrollment
Bay Area Optical Schools starts a new 4 month program each month. We probably have an opening as soon as you are ready to start, so there is no delay in moving your career into high gear.

Module Descriptions
Optics and the Eye 80 Clock Hours
This course will introduce the California Regulations pertaining to the optical industry. It will also present terminology, theories about the nature of light. Anatomical structure and functions of the eye will be discussed.
Lensometry and Verification 80 Clock Hours
The module is a combination of lecture and laboratory that presents the techniques necessary to fully utilize the lensometers, the lens clock and calipers. Precision and attention to detail will be emphasized along with proper mechanical skills.
Rx Analysis and Products 80 Clock Hours
This module presents the components of the eyewear prescription and the visual problems they are intended to correct. Emphasis will be placed on visualizing the finished product in an effort to strike a balance between the functionality and the aesthetics of the eyewear.
Fitting and Measurements 80 Clock Hours
Fitting and Measurements will present a combination of lecture material and hands on experience designed to provide the skills necessary to fit and adjust prescription spectacles. This course will also include the manipulation of frames and tools required to assure success in delivering the finished product to the consumer, as well as, the proper techniques and precision detail orientation necessary to take accurate measurements. HMO and third party insurance systems will be introduced.
